I admit it I am probably what you call a stress head’….or maybe a bit of a ‘busy’ head’ as someone once called it.
Whichever way you want to phrase it I am a born worrier. I can remember worrying so much that we didn't know how the world ‘became’ as a child, that I would have nights of sleeplessness. I would worry about Father Christmas being trapped in the chimney. I would sometimes worry that I had nothing to worry about. (No joke).
So I’ve decided to give up worry and stress for lent.
We all know stress is bad for our health. We also all know that we should be doing more to manage our stress, on an internal basis.
Well today starts the day of my 40 day challenge, giving up stress. This is gonna be a tough one!
So Join me - on my stress free Lent
TAKE 5 Minutes.
I am HUGE advocate of taking 5 or 10 minute blocks of time and doing something constructive. If 10 minutes seems manageable. Then 5 minutes seems easy. Now I don’t want to put too many rules in place about how I give up stress, but what I am encouraging is consistency.
5 minutes of your day should be targeted to stilling the mind in a meditative approach. This could be by a five minute walk (no phone no i pod). OR a more traditional meditative approach (I’m going to go with traditional to test my powers of sitting still ….).
Either way I want to encourage you to take 5 minutes of your day to think about nothing.
Research shows that the stilling of the mind on a regular basis aids stress management long term. So I am putting this to the test!
Now if anyone has ever tried meditation before, you will know that as soon as you are told to think about nothing you will start then thinking also about how the world ‘became’. So move over onto Andy Puddicombes website (he encourages ten minutes) on how to begin a meditative approach if you have never tried it before.
